What is a percentage?
A percentage expresses a share of a whole as parts per hundred. The symbol % marks that scale: 35% means the same thing as the decimal 0.35 or the fraction 35/100 (which simplifies to 7/20).
You get a percentage by taking a ratio and multiplying by 100. If 25 of 50 students in a class are male, the ratio is 25 ÷ 50 = 0.5. Then:
0.5 × 100 = 50
so 50% of the class is male.
